Novi del osrednjega pokopališča / The new part of the central cemetery, Žale, Ljubljana
Krono mesta mrtvih zaznamuje križ z žrtvenikom, ki vrh umetnega griča v obodnem parku v pogledih povezuje stari in novi del osrednjega ljubljanskega pokopališča Žale.
In respect of the importance of the relationship between the metropolis and its necropolis the city of dead is designed on the antiquity ideal. Paths with trees that give them their names run between the burial fields on which the views are discreetly veiled with green trims. In contrast, the view from slightly higher burial fields open in vast surroundings and prevent the feeling of closure. The architecture of the cemetery is completed by numerous motifs of entrances, pavilions, memorials and other contents continuing the culture of individual and carefully designed details superbly established by architect Jože Plečnik. In the newer part of the cemetery entrance portals stand out. They are particularly enriched with verses from contemporary Slovenian poets. The central unifying motif of the newer part of the cemetery is the pavilion with the passing-beell (“navček”). The new part of central cemetery is surrounded by an elevated park with created hills, tumuli, a memory of graves of antique inhabitants of our land. The park is also the ashes scattering area. The crown of the city of the dead is marked by a cross with the altar at the top of an artificial hill that visually connects the old and the new part of Ljubljana central cemetery Žale.
