Herkulov vodnjak /
Fountain of Hercules, Ljubljana

projekt in realizacija / project and realization 1989-1991

The new fountain stands at the crossing point of Stari and Gornji Trg at the same spot the first fountain was erected in the 16th Century. For the new fountain a replica of the damaged Khumerstainer's Hercules statue, that replaced the elder gilded wooden sculpture in the year 1675, was made together with replicas of dolphins, that the same sculptor made for the fountain on Mestni trg (square), replaced in 1751 by the famous fountain of Carniolia rivers by Francesco Robba.
The new fountain hides messages of the past and the present within it. Its axis emphasizes the Stična mansion and stops a floor gradient of Gornji trg (square) in front of the mansion. The form of the mighty tall column is a symbolic tree trunk, which used to grow on this spot, while the tree top was substituted by the statue of the antiquity hero. Architect Mušič placed Hercules so that his back is covered by the Stična mansion. His eyes are pointed at east, from where the dangerous attacks of Turks were expected. The stone cup lies on the undulating pedestal that is symbolically connected with dolphins but also with Argonauts, who traveled with the antiquity hero through our country. The water is trickling from the mouths and tails of the dolphins and the festive image is additionally decorated by the jet of water coming from the lion’s throat. The architect managed to create an organic entity from various elements, which has become a popular focus for visitors and citizens of the old core of the city. On the stone plaque next to the monument the Slovene poet Janez Menart wrote:

Day follows day, year follows year; while water merrily sprouts from the fountain. Passerby, remember: life is sipping away like water; so while there is time, catch it with your hands and drink it!
