Učlovečena arhitektura
Nova cerkev v Dravljah /
The Humanised Architecture
The new church in Dravlje, Ljubljana
From the book
...In 1985 the new church celebrating Christ's Incarnation was consecrated in Dravlje, a former village in the environs of Ljubljana that has today become a district in the northern part of the city. This is one of the most beautiful examples of modern church architecture in the world. It was commissioned by the Jesuit order and designed by the architect Marko Mušič. He managed to create a lasting work of art, the solutions of which continually inspire awe in worshippers, laymen and professionals alike. The new church has organically grown into the environment and unobtrusively combines its architectural and urbanistic heritage with its modern character. Its author treats his profession with all moral responsibility and envisages the architectural mission as an integral creative experience, a historical, anthropological, psychological, social and styilistic deliberation. It is down to him that the church in Dravlje is humanised: he has given it a new quality, brought it closer to man, to his state of emotions and the way he experiences the holy space, all of which suit the requirements of modern times.
Good architecture respects the individual as a personality establishing himself as a self-confident subject in time and space, and manifests its awareness of the fact that his personal microcosm is only but an insignificant cell in the universal macrocosm, as well as the fact that the moment in which he exists is merely one in the sequence of eternity. This eternity is not merely a metaphysical speculation, but a definable historical and civilisational experience of the past, as well as a hypothetical anticipation and a sober reflection of the future to come...
